LG was formerly called GoldStar and Lucky, and the name LG is actually an abbreviation of those two original brand names. The company history begins in 1958 when it was founded as GoldStar in South Korea, producing radios, TVs, and electronics. GoldStar was South Korea's first electronics company and became famous globally for affordable televisions, VCRs, and appliances. Separately, in 1952, the same founder started Lucky Chemical, which produced plastics, toothpaste under the Lucky brand, and later household products. Lucky Chemical became highly successful and later became LG Chem, now one of the world's largest chemical companies. In 1983, GoldStar and Lucky merged to form Lucky-GoldStar, which was shortened to LG in 1995 as part of a global rebranding effort to create a more international and modern identity. The rebranding to LG coincided with the company expanding aggressively into global markets and wanting a name easier for Western consumers to pronounce and remember. After the rebranding, LG created a backronym Life's Good for marketing purposes, but the official origin is Lucky and GoldStar. So if you owned a GoldStar TV in the 1980s or 1990s, you owned what is now LG.
