The primary downside of a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan is its rigid healthcare delivery model that restricts patient choice and imposes strict administrative hurdles. Members cannot see medical specialists without first obtaining a formal referral from their designated primary care physician, which can delay specialized care. Additionally, HMOs do not cover any medical services received outside of their approved provider network. If a patient visits an out-of-network doctor or hospital for non-emergency care, they are personally responsible for paying 100 percent of the medical bills out of pocket.
