Short cycling refers to a dysfunctional operating pattern where an air conditioning system turns on and off rapidly in unusually short bursts, typically completing a full cooling cycle in less than five to ten minutes instead of running for standard, sustained intervals of fifteen to twenty minutes or more. During a normal operation cycle, the AC should run long enough to effectively remove humidity and evenly cool the entire home before shutting down until indoor temperatures rise again. When short cycling occurs, the system constantly struggles to reach the thermostat setpoint because it powers down prematurely due to various mechanical, electrical, or airflow obstructions. This abnormal pattern prevents the home from cooling properly, causes severe wear and tear on electrical components and motors due to high startup amperage surges, and leads to a dramatic spike in monthly electricity consumption.
