Yes, a malfunctioning or poorly configured thermostat can directly cause an air conditioning system to short cycle. If the thermostat has a loose internal wiring connection, a failing temperature sensor, or is powered by dying batteries that cause erratic signal transmission, it may falsely signal the AC unit to turn on and off repeatedly. Furthermore, incorrect placement of the thermostat can trigger this issue; if it is installed in a hallway exposed to direct sunlight, a drafty doorway, or right next to a heat-producing appliance, it will read an inaccurate ambient temperature. As a result, the thermostat believes the house has cooled down much faster than it actually has, prompting the system to shut off prematurely and begin a disruptive short cycling pattern that compromises home comfort.
