Air conditioner short cycling can be triggered by a wide variety of electrical, mechanical, and environmental issues. One of the most frequent causes is a severely clogged or dirty air filter, which restricts airflow, causes the evaporator coils to freeze, and triggers thermal protection shutdowns. Another common culprit is low refrigerant levels resulting from a leak, which causes pressure drops that trip safety switches. Electrical issues, such as a failing run capacitor, a faulty thermostat, or loose control wiring, can also interrupt power delivery and cause erratic on-off behavior. Additionally, an oversized air conditioning unit will cool the space around the thermostat far too quickly before properly dehumidifying the home, leading to premature shutoff and chronic short cycling that damages the system over time.
