A failing or completely bad air conditioning start capacitor presents several distinct electrical and mechanical symptoms that can be easily identified if you know what to listen and look for. One of the most common signs is a loud clicking, buzzing, or humming noise coming from the outdoor condensing unit when the thermostat calls for cooling, which indicates that the motor is receiving power but lacks the electrical boost needed to spin. Another clear indicator is when the outdoor fan runs normally, but the compressor fails to start up, eventually triggering the internal thermal overload switch and tripping the circuit breaker. You might also notice that the air conditioner attempts to turn on every few minutes in a short cycling pattern, or simply fails to blow cool air entirely. Physically, a bad capacitor often shows visible signs of failure, such as a bulging top lid, fluid leaks, a burnt chemical smell, or scorch marks around the electrical terminals.
