Under normal operating conditions and moderate weather, a properly functioning residential air conditioning compressor should cycle on and off approximately two to three times per hour, with each running cycle lasting roughly fifteen to twenty minutes. This duration allows the system to efficiently pull moisture out of the air and steadily lower the indoor temperature to match the thermostat setting without causing excessive wear on electrical components. During peak summer heat waves, the compressor may run continuously or cycle much less frequently as it works hard to counteract high ambient outdoor temperatures. If your compressor is turning on and off every few minutes, it indicates an abnormal condition known as short cycling, which reduces cooling efficiency, drives up energy bills, and places excessive stress on the motor and starting capacitor.
