What is better than polyurethane depends on your project, aesthetic preference, and values, as several finishes outperform polyurethane in specific areas. For a more natural look and feel, hardwax oils like Rubio Monocoat, Osmo Polyx-Oil, and Odie's Oil are considered better because they penetrate wood, feel like real wood, are easy to spot repair, are 0VOC, and are food safe, though less water resistant than polyurethane. For outdoor durability, spar urethane or marine varnish with UV blockers is better than regular polyurethane because it flexes and resists sun. For ultimate durability on floors, two-component water-based finishes like Bona Traffic HD or Loba 2K are better than standard polyurethane, offering superior scratch resistance. For food contact, pure tung oil, linseed oil, and beeswax blends are better and safer. For eco-friendliness, natural shellac, which is made from lac beetle resin, is biodegradable and easy to repair, though less water resistant. For non-yellowing clarity on light woods, water-based polycrylic is better than oil-based polyurethane. For quick, natural protection, Danish oil is better for ease of application. So while polyurethane is excellent for tough protection, hardwax oils are often considered better for modern, natural, repairable finishes.
