Yes, there are several clear coats that are food safe once fully cured, though you must choose the right product and allow proper curing time. For wood surfaces that will contact food indirectly like dining tables, salad bowls, and countertops, food-safe clear coats include pure tung oil, raw linseed oil, food-grade mineral oil mixed with beeswax, and certain FDA-compliant water-based polyurethanes that are labeled as food safe or toy safe after full cure. Shellac, made from natural lac beetle resin dissolved in alcohol, is considered food safe once cured and is often used on salad bowls and is FDA approved. Some specific products marketed as food safe include Waterlox Original which is tung oil based, Odie's Oil, Rubio Monocoat which is 0VOC and food safe after cure, and General Finishes Salad Bowl Finish which is specifically designed for food contact. Epoxy resin can be food safe if it is FDA compliant and fully cured, but many epoxies are not. Always check the label for FDA 21 CFR 175.300 compliance for indirect food contact. For cutting boards and butcher blocks that are directly cut on, avoid film-forming clear coats like polyurethane and use penetrating oils like mineral oil and beeswax instead, as film finishes can chip into food.
