Several brands of polyurethane and clear finishes are marketed as food safe once fully cured, though you must check for FDA compliance and allow full cure time. For direct food contact surfaces that are cut on, film-forming polyurethanes are generally not recommended, but for indirect food contact like dining tables, salad bowls, and serving trays, these brands are considered food safe after full cure. General Finishes Salad Bowl Finish is specifically designed to be food safe and is FDA compliant for direct food contact. Waterlox Original Tung Oil Finish is food safe after full cure and popular for countertops. Rubio Monocoat is a 0VOC hardwax oil that is certified food safe and toy safe after cure. Odie's Oil is food safe and made with natural oils and waxes. Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane and Minwax Wipe-On Poly are considered food safe for indirect contact after 30 days cure per FDA 21 CFR 175.300, though Minwax does not market them as food grade. Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Polyurethane is also considered safe after cure. For best food safety, look for products labeled food safe, toy safe, or FDA compliant, and avoid using any polyurethane on cutting boards where knives will cut through the film, use mineral oil and beeswax instead.
