How long polyurethane lasts depends on type, traffic, maintenance, and environment. For hardwood floors, oil-based polyurethane typically lasts 5 to 10 years in high-traffic areas like hallways and kitchens before needing recoating, and 10 to 15 years in low-traffic bedrooms before it wears through. Water-based polyurethane is slightly less durable per coat but with 3 to 4 coats can last 3 to 7 years in high traffic and 7 to 10 years in low traffic, though premium two-component water-based like Bona Traffic can last 10 years. For furniture, polyurethane can last 10 to 20 years or longer with minimal wear if not abused. For outdoor use, regular polyurethane lasts only 1 to 2 years before cracking, while spar urethane lasts 2 to 4 years. Shelf life of polyurethane in the can is 2 to 3 years unopened and about 1 year after opening. Factors that shorten life include heavy foot traffic, pets, sand and grit, lack of felt pads, harsh cleaners, direct sunlight, and moisture. Proper maintenance like sweeping, using rugs, felt pads, and cleaning with pH-neutral cleaners extends life. When polyurethane shows dullness, scratches, and wear through, it is time to screen and recoat.
