A tick's worst enemy includes natural predators, environmental conditions, and human control methods that kill them at all life stages, though ticks have few highly effective natural enemies that control populations significantly. Natural enemies include certain birds like chickens, guinea fowl, and wild turkeys that eat ticks while foraging, some beetles and ants that prey on tick eggs and larvae, parasitic wasps that parasitize ticks, and fungi like Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana that infect and kill ticks. Small mammals like opossums are sometimes thought to eat ticks but recent research shows limited effect. Environmental enemies include dry, hot conditions and low humidity that cause ticks to desiccate and die, as ticks need humidity above 80 percent to survive, and cold winters can kill some ticks though many survive under leaf litter. The most effective enemies are human control methods such as acaricides and tick preventatives for pets and livestock, habitat management like mowing tall grass, removing leaf litter, creating dry barriers, and using tick tubes with treated cotton that mice take to nests killing ticks on rodents. High heat washing and drying clothing on high heat kills ticks, and thorough tick checks and prompt removal prevent disease transmission. For humans, best enemy is prevention through repellents containing DEET or permethrin treated clothing and landscape management rather than relying on natural predators alone.
