A tick will stay on a human body for 3 to 10 days if not removed, because hard ticks such as blacklegged ticks and dog ticks attach firmly using barbed mouthparts and cement-like secretion and feed slowly until engorged with blood, then drop off to molt to next stage or lay eggs in environment. Duration depends on life stage, nymphs which are tiny poppy seed size feed for 3 to 4 days, adult females feed for 5 to 10 days until swollen like small grape, adult males feed briefly or not at all. During feeding, tick remains attached continuously, not leaving and returning, so one tick equals one prolonged bite per stage. If tick is not removed, it will eventually become fully engorged and fall off on its own, but you should not wait for it to fall off because risk of disease transmission increases with attachment time, Lyme disease transmission typically requires at least 36 hours of attachment, though other pathogens can transmit faster, and longer attachment increases risk. So if you find attached tick, remove promptly with fine tipped tweezers grasping close to skin and pulling straight up, clean area, save tick in sealed bag, and monitor for symptoms like rash, fever, fatigue, joint pain for 30 days, as early removal reduces disease risk significantly.
