Showering can help remove ticks that are crawling on you but not yet attached, but it does not reliably remove ticks that have already attached firmly to skin, so showering alone does not make ticks go away completely. Ticks that are crawling on skin or in hair after outdoor activities can be washed away with water and soap during shower, especially if you shower within two hours after coming indoors, which is recommended by CDC as effective prevention because ticks often crawl for 30 minutes to several hours before attaching, and showering provides opportunity to find and wash off unattached ticks. However, once a tick has attached using barbed mouthparts and cement-like substance, water alone will not dislodge it, it must be removed manually with fine tipped tweezers grasping as close to skin as possible and pulling straight up with steady pressure. Showering also helps you perform thorough tick check, as you can feel for small bumps on skin, particularly in warm moist areas like armpits, groin, behind knees, behind ears, and scalp where ticks prefer to attach. After shower, also wash and dry clothing on high heat for 30 minutes as heat kills ticks that may remain on clothes. So while showering reduces risk by removing crawling ticks, it does not make attached ticks go away, prompt manual removal is needed for attached ticks.
