Finding one tick is common if you spend time outdoors in tall grass, wooded areas, leaf litter, or have pets that bring ticks indoors, and while you should take it seriously and remove it promptly, you should not panic, as not all ticks carry diseases and prompt removal greatly reduces risk. If you find one tick crawling on clothing or skin but not attached, remove it and wash and dry clothes on high heat, and do thorough tick check, as crawling ticks have not transmitted disease. If you find one tick attached, remove it promptly with fine tipped tweezers grasping close to skin and pulling straight up without twisting, clean area, save tick in sealed bag for identification, and monitor for symptoms for 30 days, as risk of Lyme disease transmission is low if attached less than 36 hours, though other pathogens can transmit faster. One tick bite does not mean you will get sick, only small percentage of ticks are infected and even fewer transmit after prompt removal. However, finding one tick suggests you were in tick habitat and there may be more, so check entire body including scalp, behind ears, armpits, groin, behind knees, and check pets. If you develop rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms within 30 days, see doctor and mention tick bite. So worry enough to remove promptly and monitor, but not excessive panic, as early action prevents disease.
