In medical terms, a sample is a biological specimen or material collected from a patient or from the human body for diagnostic testing, monitoring, research, or treatment planning. Medical samples include many types such as blood samples collected by venipuncture for complete blood count, glucose, cholesterol, or infection testing, urine samples collected in a sterile cup for kidney function, urinary infection, or drug screening, stool samples for digestive health or infection, sputum samples for respiratory infections, saliva samples for hormone or genetic testing, cerebrospinal fluid samples obtained via lumbar puncture, and tissue samples or biopsies where a small piece of tissue is removed for pathology examination to diagnose cancer or other diseases. Swab samples from throat, nose, or wounds are used to culture bacteria or viruses. Proper collection, labeling, handling, storage, and transport of medical samples are critical to avoid contamination, degradation, or misidentification that could lead to incorrect results. In clinical research, a medical sample can also refer to a group of patients with a specific condition selected for a study or clinical trial. So a sample in medical terms is essentially any patient material taken for analysis.
