In ACLS, which stands for Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, SAMPLE is the same mnemonic used in basic life support, EMS, and first aid to quickly collect a patient's pertinent medical history during assessment, especially when time is critical and the patient may be unstable. SAMPLE stands for S for Signs and symptoms, what signs you observe and what symptoms the patient reports, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or altered mental status. A for Allergies, asking about allergies to medications, foods, latex, or contrast that could affect drug administration. M for Medications, asking what prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, or recreational drugs the patient is taking, which is crucial because ACLS drugs can interact. P for Past medical history, asking about relevant conditions like heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, diabetes, hypertension, or prior cardiac events and surgeries. L for Last oral intake, asking when the patient last ate or drank, relevant for airway management and potential procedures. E for Events leading up to the event, asking what precipitated the current emergency, such as chest pain onset, exertion, or trauma. In ACLS, SAMPLE helps guide treatment decisions and identify causes.
