In simple terms, a pulley is a classic simple machine made of a grooved wheel and a rope, cable, or chain that runs along its edge. It is designed to help people move heavy objects much more easily or change the direction of a pulling force. Instead of lifting a heavy box straight up using only your muscles, a pulley allows you to pull downward, using your own body weight and gravity to help make the job lighter. Pulleys can be used by themselves or combined into larger networks called block-and-tackle systems to multiply your lifting strength, allowing a single person to hoist heavy items like construction materials, sails on a ship, or garage doors with minimal physical effort. It remains one of the most useful and enduring mechanical inventions created by humans.
