Building a simple working model of a pulley at home or for a science school project requires a few basic, everyday materials. You can construct a functional fixed pulley using a small empty thread spool or a round plastic wheel, a sturdy wire hanger or wooden dowel rod to serve as the central axle, strong string or nylon cord, and a small lightweight container like a paper cup to act as your load bucket. First, straighten the bottom bar of the wire hanger and slide the empty thread spool onto it so it can spin freely. Next, secure the hanger from a high anchor point, such as a sturdy hook or shelf edge. Finally, thread your string over the spool groove, tying one end to the paper cup and holding the other end in your hand. When you pull down on the string, you will see how the spool redirects your force to lift the cup.
