A living room or recreational space located in a basement is commonly referred to as a basement den, a rumpus room, a finished lower-level lounge, a family room, or a rec room (recreation room). In high-end custom home designs, these subterranean gathering spaces are often styled as home theaters, entertainment lounges, or games rooms, providing relaxed, informal areas for family relaxation away from the main formal living floors upstairs.
