A basement is never referred to as a ground floor in architectural or real estate standards. The ground floor represents the main entry-level floor of a building that sits level with or slightly elevated above the exterior ground surface. In contrast, a basement is explicitly located below the ground floor level, situated partially or entirely under the earth's surface. In some European or British terminology, the lowest level is sometimes called the lower ground floor or basement interchangeably, but they remain distinct structural planes.
