Inhaling pure argon gas or breathing air severely displaced by argon leads rapidly to oxygen deprivation (asphyxia). Because argon is odorless, tasteless, and colorless, the human body cannot detect its presence. Deprived of oxygen, a person will experience dizziness, confusion, rapid breathing, loss of consciousness, and eventual brain damage or death within minutes unless removed to fresh air.
