Nothing catastrophic happened to Glidden paint; it is still widely available and remains one of the most popular paint brands in the United States, but its ownership and distribution have changed over the years, which has caused confusion. Glidden was founded in 1875 in Cleveland, Ohio, as a varnish company and grew into a major national paint brand. It was later owned by ICI Paints and then by AkzoNobel, a Dutch multinational coatings company. In 2013, PPG Industries acquired AkzoNobel's North American architectural coatings business for $1.05 billion, which included Glidden, Olympic, Flood, and Liquid Nails, and since then Glidden has been owned and manufactured by PPG. After the acquisition, PPG streamlined Glidden's product lines into Essentials, Premium, and Diamond for interior and exterior, improved its formulations with PPG resin technology, and positioned it as a value brand sold primarily at Home Depot and Walmart, while PPG's premium lines like Timeless and Manor Hall are sold at PPG Paints stores. Some consumers thought Glidden disappeared because it left some independent hardware stores and consolidated into Home Depot, Walmart, and PPG stores, and because some historic Glidden products like Glidden Evermore were discontinued. However, Glidden is still produced in PPG factories and remains a core brand with a lifetime warranty.
