German people call themselves Deutsche, singular is Deutscher for a man and Deutsche for a woman. The country is Deutschland and the language is Deutsch. This word has a very old origin from the Old High German diutisc meaning of the people or belonging to the people, referring to the vernacular language of the people as opposed to Latin. So Deutsche literally means the people. When introducing themselves internationally they will say Ich bin Deutscher or Ich bin Deutsche, or more commonly Ich komme aus Deutschland meaning I come from Germany. They also have regional identities that are often stronger than the national one. Someone from Bavaria might say Ich bin Bayer, from Berlin Ich bin Berliner, from Saxony Sachse, from Hamburg Hamburger. Young Germans also use slang terms jokingly like Almans for themselves when talking about stereotypically German behavior like being very punctual and rule following, a term that originally came from immigrant communities. Historically other names like Germanen referred to ancient tribes, and Teutonen was poetic. But the standard modern self designation is definitely Deutsche.
