Mechanical seals fail primarily due to thermal shock, dry running without adequate fluid lubrication, abrasive particulate contamination in the pumped liquid, chemical incompatibility with corrosive fluids, and excessive mechanical vibration or shaft misalignment. When operating conditions exceed the seal face material tolerances, friction rapidly generates extreme heat, causing rapid face wear, O-ring hardening, and catastrophic fluid leakage.
