You can sometimes drive for weeks or months with a minor rear main seal weep, provided you monitor your engine oil level constantly and top it off regularly. However, if the leak is severe, oil can spray onto hot exhaust pipes creating fire hazards, contaminate the clutch disc in manual vehicles, or starve the engine of oil, leading to catastrophic engine failure.
