Despite its charm and economy, RISO printing comes with several distinct limitations. It cannot faithfully reproduce smooth photographic gradients or high-resolution continuous-tone images without dithering them into visible dot patterns. It is also prone to paper jams when handling heavy cardstock or glossy coated papers because the ink requires an uncoated, porous surface to dry properly. Furthermore, multi-color jobs require manual paper feeding for each separate color pass, which can introduce slight registration misalignments.
