RISO prints are produced using a unique digital duplicating machine manufactured by the Riso Kagaku Corporation, which functions similarly to a high-speed screen printing press. The machine wraps a master sheet around a rotating cylindrical drum, uses a thermal print head to burn tiny microscopic holes matching the digital image file, and then pushes vibrant, soy- or rice oil-based inks through the stencil onto uncoated paper. Each distinct color requires a separate pass through the machine, giving RISO prints their characteristic vintage aesthetic and rich tactile texture.
