EcoSmart water heaters, which are a separate company from EcoSmart light bulbs, make electric tankless water heaters, and while they are popular for their low upfront cost, users report several common problems. The most frequent complaint is inconsistent water temperature, often called the cold water sandwich, where the water goes hot, then cold, then hot again, especially when flow rate changes or when multiple fixtures are used. This is common in non-modulating or poorly modulated units. Second is insufficient heating in cold climates: because incoming water in winter can be as cold as 35 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, smaller EcoSmart models cannot raise the temperature enough to reach 105 to 120 degrees at a usable flow rate, resulting in lukewarm showers. Third is tripped breakers and electrical issues, as whole-home models require two or three dedicated 40 amp breakers and heavy gauge wire, and improper installation leads to overheating wires and nuisance tripping. Other reported issues include limescale buildup in hard water areas causing element failure, flow sensor failures that prevent the unit from turning on, and shorter lifespan of 8 to 12 years compared to premium German brands like Stiebel Eltron. Many problems are actually installation related, so professional sizing and installation are critical.
