Is water restoration covered by insurance depends on cause of water damage, type of policy, and whether damage was sudden and accidental versus gradual or flood-related. Generally, standard homeowners insurance does cover water damage restoration for sudden and accidental events, such as burst pipe, appliance overflow like washing machine hose breaking, water heater leak, and accidental discharge from plumbing system, where restoration costs including water extraction, drying, removal of damaged materials, and repairs are covered up to policy limits minus deductible. However, insurance typically does not cover water restoration for gradual leaks that occurred over long time due to lack of maintenance, such as slow dripping pipe that homeowner ignored, as that is considered preventable. It also does not cover flooding, defined as water from outside entering home due to heavy rain, storm surge, or overflowing rivers, which requires separate flood insurance through National Flood Insurance Program. Damage from sewage backup or sump pump failure is only covered if you purchased additional water backup endorsement. Mold remediation resulting from covered water loss may be covered but often capped at 5,000 to 10,000 dollars unless additional coverage purchased. So water restoration is covered for sudden accidental internal water losses, but not for flood or neglect. Check policy and consider endorsements.
