While a pipe bushing and a reducer accomplish the same ultimate goal of transitioning from a larger pipe size to a smaller pipe size, they are mechanically different fittings. A reducer is an actual inline pipe fitting that preserves the continuous flow path with a tapered body. A bushing is a threaded insert or sleeve that threads directly inside an existing larger fitting, coupling, or valve outlet to step down the connection size. Bushings are generally used when space is extremely restricted and a full-sized reducer fitting will not fit into the layout.
