A pipe bushing can indeed be used to reduce pipe sizes, serving a very similar ultimate function to a traditional inline reducer fitting by connecting a larger pipe opening to a smaller pipe. However, a bushing is physically distinct because it is a short, threaded plug-like sleeve that screws directly inside a larger fitting, coupling, or valve outlet rather than acting as a standalone inline pipe section. Bushings are particularly useful in tight plumbing configurations where space is extremely restricted and a standard full-sized reducer fitting cannot fit into the physical layout of the piping network.
