How do I clean the sludge out of my front load washer requires deep cleaning to remove detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, and biofilm causing odor. First, empty washer, clean door gasket, pull back rubber seal and wipe out trapped hair, coins, and slime with cloth and 50/50 white vinegar and water solution. Second, remove detergent drawer, soak in hot water with vinegar, scrub residue with toothbrush, clean drawer cavity. Third, clean drain pump filter at front bottom panel, place towel, open filter, drain water, remove lint and sludge. Fourth, run hottest Self Clean or Sanitize cycle with 1 cup bleach or washer cleaner like Affresh tablet in drum, no clothes, to dissolve sludge. Alternatively use 2 cups white vinegar in drum plus half cup baking soda in drawer. Fifth, after cycle, wipe drum and leave door open to dry. For heavy sludge, repeat with hot water cycle and manual scrubbing. Prevent sludge by using only HE detergent 1 to 2 tablespoons, not using too much softener, leaving door open after washes, and running Self Clean monthly. Regular cleaning prevents mold and odor.
