Yes, you can still buy R-22 but only as reclaimed or recovered refrigerant and only if you are EPA certified, because virgin production and import was banned in the US from January 1, 2020. R-22 is an HCFC that depletes ozone, so under Montreal Protocol it was phased out, but existing stock that has been recovered from old systems, cleaned, and reclaimed to AHRI 700 standards can be legally resold for servicing existing equipment. You need EPA Section 608 Type II or Universal certification to purchase cylinders larger than 2 pounds, and sellers must verify certification. Availability is limited and prices are high, with 25-pound cylinders costing 500 to 1200 dollars due to scarcity, compared to much cheaper when it was mass produced. Some HVAC supply houses still stock reclaimed R-22, and online sellers offer it with certification check. For homeowners, you cannot buy it without certification and should not try to recharge your own system, you must hire a certified technician. No new equipment using R-22 can be manufactured, so market is only for servicing old systems, and as those systems retire, R-22 supply will eventually disappear.
