You cannot directly replace R-22 with R-410A in the same air conditioning system by simply swapping refrigerants, as they are incompatible and such a replacement would cause equipment failure and safety hazards. R-22 and R-410A have very different operating pressures, with R-410A operating at about 50 to 60 percent higher pressure than R-22, so components like compressor, coils, and piping designed for R-22 cannot handle R-410A pressures. They use different compressor oils, R-22 uses mineral oil while R-410A uses synthetic polyolester oil which are not compatible, mixing causes sludge and compressor damage. Expansion devices and metering are sized differently. Doing a direct drop-in would void warranty, violate codes, and be illegal if not approved. The correct way to replace R-22 with R-410A is to replace the entire system including outdoor unit, indoor coil, and often lineset with equipment designed for R-410A or newer R-454B. If you want to keep existing equipment, you must use EPA-approved R-22 retrofit alternatives like R-407C, R-438A, or R-422D which have similar pressures to R-22 and require oil change and component adjustments, but even those are not as efficient and have their own issues.
