You cannot directly replace R22 with R32 by simply swapping refrigerants in the same system, as they are incompatible and require different equipment and handling. R22 is an HCFC operating at lower pressures with mineral oil lubricant and is non-flammable A1, while R32 is an HFC difluoromethane operating at much higher pressures similar to R-410A, about 50 percent higher than R22, and uses polyolester oil and is mildly flammable A2L. Components like compressor, expansion valve, and piping designed for R22 cannot handle R32 pressure and oil incompatibility, and mixing oils causes sludge and compressor failure. R32 is not an EPA-approved drop-in retrofit for R22 systems, attempting it would void warranty, violate safety codes, and risk fire. The correct approach is to replace the entire system with equipment designed for R32 or R454B, or use an approved R22 retrofit refrigerant like R-407C, R-438A, R-422D, or R-427A which operate at similar pressures to R22 but still require oil change, filter drier replacement, and performance adjustments. These retrofits are not as efficient as R32 systems. Always consult a certified technician and manufacturer guidelines rather than attempting direct replacement.
