R-22 refrigerant has a very faint, slightly sweet, chloroform-like odor at high concentrations, but at low concentrations typical of small leaks it is essentially odorless to most people, so you cannot rely on smell to detect it. Pure R-22 is often described as almost odorless, with only a faint ether-like smell when concentrated in a confined space. Because it is colorless and nearly odorless, leaks are difficult to detect by senses alone, which is why technicians use electronic leak detectors, soap bubble tests, UV dye, or halide torches that change flame color. You might sometimes smell refrigerant oil that leaks along with R-22, which can have a slightly oily or chemical smell, but the R-22 itself is hard to smell. This lack of strong odor increases safety risks because R-22 is heavier than air and can displace oxygen in basements or low areas without warning, causing asphyxiation, and high concentrations can cause dizziness and nausea without strong smell warning. By contrast, ammonia refrigerant has a very strong pungent odor that makes leaks obvious, but R-22 does not, so reliance on smell for leak detection is ineffective and dangerous.
