R-22 compressors are still available but becoming increasingly scarce and expensive because R-22 systems are obsolete and manufacturers have shifted to new refrigerants. R-22 was the standard for residential AC for decades, so millions of systems still use it, and aftermarket and some OEMs continue to produce or stock replacement compressors for servicing existing R-22 units, particularly scroll and reciprocating compressors in common sizes like 2 to 5 tons. You can find them through HVAC supply houses, online distributors, and remanufactured compressor suppliers, though lead times may be longer and prices higher than for R-410A or R-32 compressors. Some technicians offer drop-in replacement compressors that can work with R-22 or retrofit to R-407C or other alternatives with oil changes. However, many manufacturers have discontinued new R-22 compressor models and focus on R-410A, R-32, and R-454B compressors for new equipment. As R-22 systems age out and are replaced due to high refrigerant cost and inefficiency, demand for R-22 compressors will decline. For now, they are available for repair purposes, but often it is more economical to replace the entire old R-22 system with a new high efficiency system using low GWP refrigerant rather than replacing just the compressor.
