Can earwigs crawl in the ears?

Can earwigs crawl in the ears? The myth that earwigs crawl in human ears and lay eggs is false, though name earwig comes from old superstition. Earwigs are nocturnal insects that prefer damp dark places like under mulch and rocks, not human ears, and they do not seek out ears to enter or lay eggs. While it is theoretically possible for any small insect to accidentally crawl into ear if person sleeps on floor in heavily infested area, it is extremely rare for earwigs and not typical behavior, as they avoid human contact and are not attracted to ear wax or warmth. There are no documented cases of earwigs living or breeding in human ears. They may wander indoors but do not infest beds or ears. So earwigs do not crawl in ears intentionally, myth is unfounded, risk is almost zero in normal home, they prefer soil and decaying matter outdoors, not human ears.
