Kyle Sandilands Quits Australian Idol, Citing Activist Pressure on Advertisers

Australian media personality Kyle Sandilands has resigned from his judging role on Channel Seven's Australian Idol after four seasons, citing pressure from activist group Mad F---ing Witches targeting the show's advertisers. He will launch his own subscription-based show, Kyle Sandilands Live, on August 10.

Shock Jock Steps Down "For the Good of the Brand"

Kyle Sandilands has quit his role as a judge on Australian Idol, telling the Seven Network he wanted to shield the program from an escalating advertiser boycott campaign. The polarising media personality informed the network of his decision on Friday morning .

"I spoke with Channel Seven this morning, and those activists have attacked the potential clients for Australian Idol or the clients from last year, and has caused a problem in Channel Seven's sales team," Sandilands told The Sydney Morning Herald . "So I've told Channel Seven this morning, just prior to speaking to you, that I'm standing down from Idol for the good of the brand to continue" .

Sandilands was part of the show's relaunch on Channel Seven in 2023, appearing alongside fellow judges Marcia Hines and Amy Shark . The show's 11th season finale aired in April, and Sandilands said he will not renew his one-year contract in September .

Seven's Director of Content, Unscripted, Majella Hay, confirmed the network is looking for a new judge. "We've had an amazing four seasons with Kyle and have loved everything he's brought to Idol. We wish him well and can't wait to see what he accomplishes with his new project," Hay said . "Kyle is a one-off individual talent. I won't say we are looking for a replacement, because no one can replace Kyle. But we are now looking for a new judge who brings their own unique energy to Australian Idol" .

Activist Group's Advertiser Campaign Intensifies

The decision comes amid a sustained campaign by the activist group Mad F---ing Witches. The group, which previously targeted advertisers on Sandilands' KIIS FM breakfast show, has been pressuring Seven's corporate partners to distance themselves from the program due to Sandilands' presence .

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports that a campaign to remove Sandilands from Australian Idol was already underway in April, as Mad F---ing Witches mobilised its members to lobby advertisers to abandon the program during the show's grand final . The group had already claimed significant success in its campaign against Sandilands' radio show, saying its efforts prompted 1,900 advertisers to agree not to fund the program .

New Subscription Show on the Horizon

Sandilands' departure from Idol comes as he prepares to launch his own paid subscription platform in mid-August . The show, titled Kyle Sandilands Live, will debut on August 10 as a standalone app featuring an "uncensored, ad-free" daily breakfast show . Subscribers will pay $99 per year for access, which includes both audio and video content .

The venture follows Sandilands' legal settlement with his former employer ARN Media over the termination of his $100 million contract. After suing ARN for $85 million over his dismissal, Sandilands ultimately settled for more than $12 million . As part of the agreement, ARN will provide $1.5 million worth of advertising services for his new project over three years, while receiving 19.9 per cent of any revenue it generates .

Tumultuous 2026 for the Media Personality

Sandilands' departure from Idol marks the latest development in a turbulent 2026, which has also seen the end of his long-running Kyle and Jackie O Show and legal disputes with his former employer . The radio show was terminated in March after an on-air clash in which Sandilands accused co-host Jackie "O" Henderson of being "off with the fairies" and "almost unworkable" due to her fixation with horoscopes .

Henderson is pursuing her own separate legal action against ARN Media, claiming at least $82 million in compensation for wrongful termination . The activist group Mad F---ing Witches had also previously targeted The Kyle and Jackie O Show, contributing to advertiser pressure .

A Polarising Figure's Next Chapter

Sandilands' resignation from Australian Idol ends his association with the show, where he had served as a judge for a total of eight years across two stints: the original run on Network Ten from 2005 to 2009 and the Seven Network reboot from 2023 .

In an interview in January, Sandilands stated his Idol contract was worth approximately $1 million per year and had historically been renewed on one-year terms . Now, with his focus shifting to his own media venture, the shock jock is betting on a subscription model that bypasses traditional advertising and the activism that has increasingly targeted his commercial partnerships
