Ants may reduce in numbers after thorough cleaning because cleaning removes food crumbs, grease, and pheromone trails that attract and guide them, but cleaning alone rarely makes ants go away permanently because it does not eliminate the colony, queen, or nest hidden in walls or outdoors, and new ants will return if entry points remain open. Odorous house ants, tiny black ants common in kitchens, are attracted to even smallest crumbs, a drop of juice, or grease that may be invisible, and when you clean countertops with 50-50 vinegar and water, vacuum floors and under appliances, store food in sealed glass or metal containers, take out trash, and clean pet food bowls, you remove competing food sources and erase chemical trails that scouts laid down, so visible foraging may decrease significantly within hours. However, the colony still exists with thousands of workers and a queen that lives 3 to 7 years and will keep sending scouts to search for new food sources, and ants can survive on tiny residues you miss. If you do not also seal entry points with caulk around windows and doors and fix moisture issues that attract carpenter ants that nest in damp wood, ants will find new ways in. For lasting elimination, cleaning must be combined with targeted slow-acting gel baits containing fipronil, hydramethylnon, or borax such as Terro Liquid Ant Bait placed near trails but not on top of repellent sprays, allowing workers to carry bait back through trophallaxis to kill queen within days to two weeks. So cleaning helps reduce and is essential first step, but alone it will not make ants go away permanently.
