Yes, Coke Zero can attract ants despite having zero sugar, because it contains artificial sweeteners and other ingredients that some ants may investigate, though it is less attractive than regular sugary soda. Odorous house ants, which are tiny black ants common in kitchens, are primarily attracted to sweets and sugars, so regular Coca-Cola with high sugar content is highly attractive and will quickly recruit hundreds of ants when spilled. Coke Zero contains no sugar but contains artificial sweeteners like aspartame and acesulfame potassium plus flavorings, caffeine, and phosphoric acid, and while most ants prefer real sugar, some ants may still be attracted to the sweet taste of artificial sweeteners or to moisture and other residues in the drink, especially if other food sources are scarce. Studies show mixed results, with some ant species avoiding artificial sweeteners while others will still forage on them, particularly if they are sweet-seeking. The bigger attractant in Coke Zero spills is the moisture and the sticky residue that can also attract other pests like fruit flies if not cleaned. Even diet sodas can leave a residue that ants investigate. To prevent ants from being attracted, clean up any soda spills immediately, wipe down surfaces with soapy water or vinegar and water to remove residue and pheromone trails, store drinks sealed, and take out trash. For control, do not rely on soda as bait, but use proven gel baits containing borax or fipronil that are formulated to be highly attractive and carry poison back to colony, combined with sanitation and sealing entry points with caulk.
