It is generally okay to sleep in a room with a few odorous house ants, which are tiny black ants that form trails and do not bite or sting humans, from a medical safety perspective, but it can be unpleasant, unhygienic, and cause anxiety or minor skin irritation, so it is best to control them rather than ignore them long-term. Odorous house ants are mainly a nuisance pest that contaminates food and crawls on surfaces but does not bite sleeping people, so sleeping in a room with a small number is not considered dangerous, though they can get into bedding if there are crumbs. Carpenter ants, larger black ants that nest in damp wood, also do not typically bite sleepers unless disturbed, but their presence indicates moisture problems that should be fixed. However, fire ants which are reddish and aggressive can bite and sting, causing painful welts, and if they invade bedrooms they can bite sleepers, especially children and elderly, which is not okay and requires immediate control. Pharaoh ants can spread bacteria in sensitive environments like hospitals. For most people, main issues are psychological discomfort, feeling of uncleanliness, and potential allergic reactions in sensitive individuals if ants crawl on skin. Ants do not transmit diseases like bed bugs or mosquitoes. To make sleeping more comfortable, store food sealed, clean crumbs, seal cracks with caulk, keep bed away from walls, and use gel baits containing fipronil or borax placed away from beds that workers carry back to kill colony. If you have fire ants or large numbers, contact pest control. For occasional odorous house ants, it is okay short-term while treating.
