Ants hate most strong smells and substances that disrupt pheromone trails or irritate their bodies, with the most universally disliked being peppermint, vinegar, citrus, cinnamon, and physical barriers like sticky surfaces and water, though no single hate eliminates colonies permanently without baits. Peppermint oil with its strong menthol scent is one of the top things ants hate because it disrupts scent trails that odorous house ants use to navigate from nest to food, and diluted peppermint oil sprayed around entry points, baseboards, and windows can deter foraging temporarily, though effect fades once dry. White vinegar with its acidic smell is disliked and useful for wiping down countertops and trails to erase pheromone markers using 50-50 vinegar and water solution. Citrus smells including lemon, orange, and citronella are disliked and can be used to clean surfaces. Cinnamon powder has a spicy smell ants avoid and can be sprinkled near entry points to block trails temporarily, as does black pepper, cayenne pepper which irritates, baby powder or talc which clogs breathing pores, and diatomaceous earth which dehydrates insects when they walk through it. Ants also hate sticky barriers like petroleum jelly or Tanglefoot around table legs, double-sided tape, and water moats, which is why pet food bowls placed in shallow water prevent ants from reaching them as ants cannot swim. However, lasting control requires sanitation, sealing cracks, and gel baits containing fipronil or borax that workers carry back to kill queen and colony.
