Why was Friends canceled, Friends was not canceled in sense of being terminated due to low ratings, it ended voluntarily after ten seasons from 1994 to 2004 because creators and cast decided to conclude show while still popular. Reasons for ending include cast wanting to pursue other opportunities and avoid being typecast, as Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer had been playing same characters for ten years and wanted new challenges and film careers. Creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane felt stories had reached natural conclusion, with characters growing up, getting married, having children, and moving on, and they did not want show to decline in quality. Financial considerations also played role, cast was earning one million dollars per episode each in final seasons, making show extremely expensive to produce, though still profitable. NBC wanted to continue but respected creators decision to end on high note. Final episode aired May 6 2004 and was huge event with 52.5 million viewers, considered successful conclusion rather than cancellation. So Friends ended by choice to preserve legacy, not due to cancellation from network.
