Why did Richard Coyle leave Coupling, Richard Coyle played Jeff Murdock in first three series of BBC sitcom Coupling from 2000 to 2002, and left after series three for career reasons. In interviews, Coyle explained he left because he did not want to be typecast as socially awkward Jeff character for rest of career, as Jeff was highly distinctive role with paranoid rants and comedic nervousness that became very popular, and he worried about being pigeonholed. He wanted to pursue other acting opportunities including theatre, film, and more dramatic roles, and had been doing stage work alongside television. He also mentioned working schedule was demanding and he wanted to explore different creative challenges. Creator Steven Moffat respected his decision and wrote Jeff out of series four, with storyline that Jeff moved to Lesbos after relationship issues. Coyle went on to have successful career in theatre, film Prince of Persia, and television including Covert Affairs, The Whistleblower, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as Father Blackwood. He has said he enjoyed time on Coupling but felt three years was enough and wanted to avoid staying too long in one role.
