Was there an American version of Coupling, yes, there was American version of British sitcom Coupling produced by NBC in 2003, adapted from original BBC series created by Steven Moffat, who was also involved as producer. American version attempted to remake British show with same scripts and characters, following six friends navigating dating and relationships in similar style, with characters renamed but essentially same. Cast included Jay Harrington as Steve, Colin Ferguson as Patrick, Christopher Moynihan as Jeff, Lindsay Price, Rena Sofer, and Sonya Walger. Show was heavily promoted by NBC but received poor reception from critics and viewers who felt it was too direct copy without original charm and chemistry of British cast, and faced competition. American Coupling aired only four episodes in fall 2003 before being canceled due to low ratings, though additional episodes were produced but unaired, total of 11 episodes made, 4 aired. British original ran 28 episodes over four series and won awards, while American remake is considered example of failed adaptation of British comedy for American audience, similar to other failed remakes, and is rarely remembered today except as cautionary example of adaptation.
