A toilet randomly flushing or cycling on its own is experiencing phantom flushing caused by an internal tank leak. When a rubber flapper valve fails to seal securely against the flush valve opening, water continuously trickles into the bowl until the tank water level drops. This drop triggers the fill valve to turn on automatically and refill the reservoir, making it sound like the toilet is flushing itself spontaneously. Verification: Add dark food coloring to the tank; if colored water appears in the bowl within 15 minutes, an internal flapper leak is present.
