A phantom or ghost flushing sound occurs when a slow internal water leak from the tank into the bowl causes the water level to drop gradually. Once the water level recedes below the float threshold, the fill valve automatically opens for a few seconds to refill the tank, creating the acoustic illusion and running sound of a toilet flushing itself. The most common cause is a warped, degraded, or calcified rubber flapper valve failing to seal tightly. Verification: Add food coloring to the tank; if colored water seeps into the bowl within 15 minutes without flushing, the flapper is leaking.
