A faucet can suddenly become stiff and difficult to turn due to a sudden surge of mineral scale (calcium and lime) breaking loose within the water supply lines and lodging inside the moving parts of the cartridge, or due to a failure of the internal factory lubrication. When hard water minerals precipitate out rapidly or debris jams the valve mechanism, friction increases dramatically, making the handle hard to move. Callout type="warning" title="Hygiene Warning": Shut off the water supply valves under the sink before disassembling the handle. Verification: Disassemble the valve assembly, clean away mineral crust in white vinegar, apply silicone grease, and test handle movement.
